The Great Seattle Fire (June 6, 1889)

The story of Seattle’s Great Fire and the emergence of its underground city is a remarkable chapter in the city’s history. Here's an overview of these two closely linked events:

Location: The fire broke out in a woodworking shop located in downtown Seattle, near what is now Pioneer Square.

Cause: The disaster began when an apprentice accidentally tipped over a pot of glue. The glue ignited, and the flames spread rapidly. At the time, downtown Seattle was primarily constructed of wood, with wooden buildings, sidewalks, and streets filled with sawdust, creating highly flammable conditions that made the fire nearly unstoppable.

Scale: The fire devastated 25 city blocks, including the entire downtown business district, effectively wiping out most of Seattle's central commercial area.
